I am a huge fan of Hawkins. I really am. I re-read the Hex Hall series a lot. I have been waiting for this book for a long time because I love Hawkins so much and that cover is just gorgeous. But... this book was disappointing. While reading the story I felt like it just went on and on. The climax was unsatisfying. Honestly, the highest point in the book is the beginning, when she's fighting with the teacher in the bathroom. Other than that the book just sort of...Hmm. The chemistry between David and Harper was pretty decent, so that is a definite selling point of the book. I just felt that Harper was a little annoying at times. There's this whole subplot about her sister, and while that is supposed to have had some huge affect on the person she has become, but it kind of seems like Harper as always been a control freak overly concerned with her appearances. I don't know, maybe that was just me. And also, the ending of the book just makes me annoyed. It's just so YA fantasy cliche. Let it be known that I was expecting a fantastic book. That is typical of what Hawkins gives me. A lot of suspense, a killer heroine, and a guy so hot you want to rip him out of the pages. However, nothing in this book scared or surprised me, the heroine was alright, and David could barely hold a candle to the greatness of Archer cross. So I would give the book 3.5 stars, but I think I might read the next book, because, knowing what Hawkins is capable of in the writing world (AMAZING THINGS) I know she can turn it around and give us something great. While I wouldn't tell you not to read the book, I understand if you don't want to read it. I almost wish I hadn't - I hate being disappointed by something Hawkins wrote. But, I would still give this series a chance. It has some great elements that could make for a really good sequel.
